In 1978, women in Nanaimo discovered that they could call a number if they needed to leave an abusive husband or partner. Haven's handful of courageous volunteers had pagers to alert them to calls, and they often went alone to women's homes to help them. Families in the community opened up their homes for women who needed a place to go.

Forty years later, we look back with gratitude at the innumerable volunteers, board members, community members, and donors who helped to change the lives of tens of thousands of women in Central Vancouver Island.
